Apology to the Nez Perce

The 222nd General Assembly (2016) directed “that the PC(USA) and its members apologize to United States citizens of Native American ancestry, both those within and beyond our denomination. We offer this apology especially to those who were and are part of ‘stolen generations’ during the Indian-assimilation movement, namely former students of Indian boarding schools, their families, and their communities.”

In addition to G.A. apologies that have been offered, individual presbyteries are doing the same. On July 2nd, 2017 Larry Veith (Stated Clerk), and Eric Peterson (Moderator) attended a worship service at the annual Talmaks meeting of the Nez Perce. Larry preached, and Eric offered an apology for the ways we in the Inland NW have been complicit in acts of racism, discrimination, and war against Native Americans within our bounds over the years. Executive Presbyter Sheryl Kinder-Pyle also offered an apology to the General Council on September 29th, 2017. Please find the apologies in writing by clicking on the links below.
